Everyone knows that exercise will boost your metabolism but did you know that there are some foods that can help you achieve the boost you want as well?
As a refresher, metabolism is your body's way of burning calories (fuel) for energy to supply to all your organs so they work properly. It's the body's job to keep a supply of potential energy (fat stores) to keeping the body working. Foods affect metabolism differently. Some can slow metabolism and others are boost the calorie burn. Wouldn't it be nice to know what foods can help you achieve your goals?
Here are some of the foods that will help you burn fat.
· Water: No calories of course but that's not why. Drinking water keeps the body hydrated and flushes out toxins. Drink at least 6-8 glasses a day. Coffee and tea don't count.
· Green Tea: Green tea is loaded with good things that promote fat burning. It helps boost metabolism but also has antioxidants which fight free radicals.
· Apples: Your mother was right when she told you to take an apple in your school lunch. Apples contain something called pectin which limits fat absorption. It also assists in releasing fat deposits. Drinking water as described above helps to flush these deposits out of the body.
· Protein (Lean): The reason for choosing lean protein should be apparent. If you're trying to get rid of fat in the body, it would be incongruous to add fat by eating fatty foods. Make your protein choices lean. The process of protein digestion adds to fat burning.
· Spices: Spice up your life to lose weight! A bit of chili will get the metabolism going.
· Garlic: Not to keep vampires at bay but this little gem actually increases body temperature and helps boost metabolism.
· Nuts: Nuts are a good source of protein and can help reduce hunger between meals. Some can be high in fat so choose wisely but they can help you feel fuller longer.
· Fish Oil: Taking supplements can help in weight loss. Fish oil has been found to be beneficial by increasing efficiency of the fat burning process.
· Vegetables: Yes, you MUST eat your veggies. The greener the better. Avoid those that are high in starch like potatoes and corn. Focus on high fiber vegetables like tomatoes, broccoli and cauliflower. Add as many different veggies to your daily diet as possible. Don't forget other goodies like Brussels sprouts and asparagus. Variety is the spice of life. You'll feel so much better. Once you learn to eat more of the good vegetables, you'll crave them if you take a break from eating them. It's great when you get to the point where you crave what's good for you and not the other way around.
· Calcium: Very important in hormone regulation. It helps break down fat cells and release the fat stored there. Look for those green veggies again and even some nuts, like almonds contain calcium too.
This list is by no means exhaustive but will get you going in the right direction. Use food to your benefit and look at food as a friend. Make conscious choices, listen to your body and move forward to better health.
